2025
Following the December 2024 opening of Island Health Care’s four-chair Dental Center at 1 Mariner’s Landing in Edgartown, 2025 has been a year of growth, stabilization, and expanding reach. Under the leadership of Dental Director Dino Maggiulli and through an ongoing collaboration with Boston University’s Goldman School of Dental Medicine, the Dental Center has focused on building a strong, sustainable clinical foundation while delivering high-quality, accessible dental care to Island residents. During this initial growth phase, the Dental Center has served 923 adult patients and 172 pediatric patients, accounting for 2,905 total visits. These early volumes reflect the careful ramp-up of a new dental practice—establishing staffing models, clinical workflows, referral pathways, and care coordination—while prioritizing patient experience, continuity of care, and long-term sustainability. Youth oral health remains a central focus of the Dental Center’s mission. As awareness of the program continues to grow across the Island, more families are connecting with care locally, many for the first time. Preventive services, restorative treatment, and early intervention are helping lay the groundwork for improved lifelong oral health outcomes for Vineyard children. Looking ahead, Island Health Care is building on this foundation by expanding its role as a clinical education site. In collaboration with Boston University, the Dental Center plans to integrate dental residents in 2026, further strengthening access to care while supporting the next generation of dental professionals in a community-based setting. Now firmly embedded within Island Health Care’s broader healthcare system, the Dental Center is positioned for continued growth in pediatric and family dental services. We are deeply grateful to MVYouth for its early investment and continued support in making this essential community resource possible.
2024
On December 11, 2024, Island Health Care welcomed its first patients to our new four-chair Dental Center at 1 Mariner's Landing in Edgartown. Under Dental Director Dino Maggiulli's leadership and with the guidance of Boston University's Goldman School of Dental Medicine, we have built a comprehensive dental home for Vineyard residents who have lacked access to care. A significant focus of our practice is on providing essential dental care to the 2,500+ island youth who previously had limited or no access to oral healthcare and we are especially proud to offer services regardless of insurance status or ability to pay. So far, we have made tremendous progress scheduling appointments for the 1,200 patients on our waiting list and look forward to serving everyone who needs a dentist on the island. We are so thankful to MVYouth, our advisors, supporters, and friends for helping to make our community's Dental Center a reality.
2023
Island Health Care (IHC) is an essential part of the Martha’s Vineyard community, offering a comprehensive range of services including family healthcare, mental and behavioral health services, substance use disorder counseling, chronic disease management, and community-based public health initiatives targeting social determinants of health. In June 2024, IHC will launch its new Dental Center, made possible by funding from MVYouth, along with federal and state grants, private donations and support from Martha’s Vineyard Bank. The center will cater to children, young adults, adults and seniors, providing a wide array of dental services. IHC has completed all necessary property acquisitions, met federal environmental and historic preservation requirements, and engaged an architectural firm for the Dental Center's design. Construction plans and applications have been submitted to the MA Department of Public Health, and construction contracts have been awarded. Construction is set to begin upon state approval. Dr. Aldino Maggiulli, the inaugural dental director at Island Health Care, has already relocated to the island and is actively coordinating and managing all Dental Center operations. He is collaborating with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Boston University's Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine, contractors, dental suppliers, the local dental community, and dental hygiene schools to staff, equip, and prepare the clinic.
2022
We are excited to report that work is well underway at Island Health Care to build, equip and staff a new, 4 chair dental facility where we can provide critical, full service, safety net dental care for island youth and their families. Our architects have completed the plans and drawings for our beautiful space at 1 Mariners Way in Edgartown and are in the process of ordering equipment and supplies. Our plan is to build out the dental center space over the next 9 months and open for business towards the end of 2023.
In a unique partnership with Boston University’s Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine, we are developing an integrated model of primary care that will include oral health care provided by a team of full-time oral health professionals and dental faculty, students, and residents from Boston University.
What this means for our community is a long-term commitment by the Island’s Federally Qualified Health Center to operate a comprehensive safety net dental center that will finally meet the needs of the more than 2500 children who presently lack any access to oral health care. We will also provide preventive services and support for school children including the uninsured and underserved, and those covered by Medicaid, including our Brazilian immigrant population.
