Sawyer Schaefer - University of Vermont
2025
My first semester at the University of Vermont has been truly amazing. After I completed my first round of classes in the nursing program, I experienced both struggle and reward. I have an immense amount of support from my professors and classmates to help me thrive in rigorous courses. Some of the memorable classes I was enrolled in are organic chemistry, human development, and defending sacred earth. These classes were very interesting and it is exciting to begin focusing on an education dedicated to my career. Aside from academics, I have enjoyed getting familiar with Burlington. I have made many trips down to Lake Champlain exploring the beach and trails; along with hiking the mountains I see everyday from campus. At first I was overwhelmed with all the new opportunities, but shortly after school started I attended the club fair where I joined many clubs, including the ski club, art club, and Vermont nursing association. In return I have built lots of new friendships by attending the meetings and events. The transition from my close knit community on Martha’s Vineyard to the “real world” was an exciting new adventure. During orientation I familiarized myself with the campus and met lots of friendly people. As I adjusted to my new reality, I quickly found community within my nursing family and my fellow dormitory residents. So far it has been incredible in Vermont. I am thrilled to start my second semester and see what is to come in 2026. Of course, I am so beyond grateful and appreciative for MVYouth supporting me and helping my educational dreams come true at UVM.
